The National Unity Platform (NUP) has welcomed the recent ruling by the International Criminal Court of Justice (ICJ), where it ordered Uganda to pay $325M (shs1.5trillion) to DRC as war reparations.

The funds will be paid in installments for a period of five years.

Between August 1998 and 1999, Ugandan troops invaded the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo and committed what DRC called grave atrocities against the people and resources of that country.

In a press statement, Robert Kyagulanyi the party president said that the decision by ICK is highly welcomed.

We have no reason to disagree with the findings and orders of the Court. It will be noted that this continues to be Gen. Museveni’s behavior both at home and abroad. He simply needs to be stopped,” he said

The more he stays in power illegally and against the will of the people of Uganda, he will continue to commit such crimes on the populations in Uganda and the neighboring countries,” he added

Kyagulanyi noted that It is most unfortunate that the violations and plunder mentioned in the judgment were committed by a few military officers but now it is the people of Uganda who have to shoulder the burden of paying reparations to such a magnitude. We extend sympathies to the people of the DRC, especially those who lost loved ones.

The National Unity Platform pledges its commitment to adherence to the rule of law at home and compliance with Uganda’s international legal and human rights obligations,” he said

However, the Foreign Ministry yesterday protested the ruling saying that ICJ acted out of volition.

The ministry said that the two countries are now working with each other so there is no need for such judgments.

The government however said that the Attorney General will scrutinize the ruling to see its magnitude.
