Uganda has mostly a tropical climate characterized by stable rainfall patterns. However, the effects of climate change have turned the seasons around with the country experiencing shorter or longer rains and harsher droughts, especially in eastern and North-Eastern Uganda.
The Climate change patterns have since triggered debates on how best safety can further be guaranteed.
For Professor Umaru Kakumba, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, researchers ought to prioritize studies on Climate Change and Climate Resilience for informed protection consent.
Prof. Kakumba believes that food security can only be realized if there is clear environmental protection which also can be effectively done through research.
“Climate Change, Resilience, and Sustainability are pertinent to the livelihood of humanity. We can guarantee food safety only if there is proper climate protection.”
“This can be done through capacity building and building community of practice, among locals who are directly affected by Climate Change.”
The recommendations by Kakumba while he officially opened the EfD-Mak Centre Policy Dialogue at Makerere University were commended by Makerere College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COBAMs) Principal, Prof Eria Hisali.
Prof Hisali said that the intensity of green financing could be part of the best efforts in bettering Climate Change.
“Green financing is broad and it includes among others investing in actions, supporting climate resilience in a sustainable way. Actions small scale farmers will entail the broader range of national level,” he said.
The dialogue, organized under the theme: Green Financing and Capacity Gaps; Implications for Energy Access and transition looks forward to wrapping up the five-day 16th International Environmental Research conference that happened between September 22 and 26 at Speke resort Munyonyo.
For Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the government and local communities living around lake Victoria must jealously protect it if a climate that will benefit generations to come is to thrive.
“Uganda’s population is now 45 million and in 50 years to come, it will be 200 million yet this lake has the capacity of sustaining them. Let’s do studies aimed at protecting the environment to save the Eco-system for the future,”
Assoc. Prof. Kohln Gunnar from the University of Gothenburg school of business, economics, and law pledged EfD Global continued support of its members to ensure that Climate Change is made better.
“Makerere University is one of our 30 members across the globe. Our discussions have informed us on where to invest more as far as research is concerned.”
“Studies will be conducted in climate change adaptation and mitigation, we are now in a decade of action and are intensifying commitment in addressing climate change,” he added.
