Vetting NUP candidates in Kawempe North polls set for today

Ten aspirants in the Kawempe North Parliamentary By-elections, who expressed interest to be given the National Unity Platform (NUP) card will be vetted today.

The successful among the ten will then be picked and fronted by the party to participate in the March 3 polls that are aimed at replacing the deceased Muhammad Ssegirinya who died from Lubaga Hospital last month.

“The Election Management Committee (EMC) will conduct a Vetting and Screening session tomorrow, Thursday, 16th 2025, for persons who expressed intarest in carrying the Party’s flag in the Kawempe North Member of Parliament and Councillor Kazu Angola Ward by-eductions,” a Notice signed by Mercy Walukamba the EMC chairperson reads in part.

It adds, “The prospective Candidates shall be allerwed to bring with them a maximum of five (5) delegates,”
The vetting come two days after the Committee concluded the exercise where it received the expression interest of these candidates.

The vetting process will start at 10:00am with U mar Mag ala, who was among the first people to express their interest.
This will be followed by Mulumba Matthias, then Nsereko Motes, Kakilka Fredrick, Dr. Charles Rubagumya, Eng. Ssankungu Kenneth, Counsel Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola, Sserunkuuma Salim, followed by Ssegirinya’s former personal assistant Muhammad Luwemba, and concluded with Kulya Saulo Zziwa.

The position of the Councillor LC3 Kazo Angola Ward attracted two candidates including Yiga Musa Ngobya and Ssetuba Habibah who will also be vetted.
The entire exercise, according to Walukamba will run between 10:00am and 3:50pm.

After the vetting process, the candidates will then battle in a public debate that shall be held at the party headquarters tomorrow where they will share their manifesto with the electorate.

Speaking at the press conference on Tuesday this week, Robert Kyagulanyi, the NUP party president commended the EMC and charged it with being objective and fair while harmonizing with the candidates to get the most eligible.
