RA Ahmad Aduaze, a UPDF Officer on Sunday shot dead a suspected Thug who had attacked the offices of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in Koboko district.
Vincent Nyota 24, a Kakwa by tribe, a peasant and resident of Arese village, Dregiba parish, Midia Subcounty, was shot dead by Aduaze after he hit PC Yoda Poru with a hammer on the head, grabbed his gun and took off.
“As the guard officers were busy concentrating on a big crowd that was matching along Koboko-Yumbe Road during the independence day celebrations, one Ngota Vincent attacked SPC Yosa Poru, hit him on the forehead with a claw metallic harmer, robbed his Riffle number UG. POL 564809077-10294 with 30 rounds of ammunitions amidst serious struggle,” SP Josephine Angucia the WestNile Police spokesperson said in a press statement,
“In the process, a UPDF officer number RA Aduaze Ahumad joined the struggle to save his colleague and recover the said gun,” she added
According to Angucia, the deceased was seen by the URA guards seated on the Varandah at the extreme end of URA building mending shoes
During the scuffle, Ngota, Angucia said overpowered the three officers with the gun and ran towards Alimakodra cell, where notorious thugs commonly stay.
“RA Aduaze Ahumad shot a warning bullet on the ground so as to make him surrender the gun, but one Nyota Vincent instead turned back to him in an attempt to shoot at the officer. In self defense the officer shot him dead,” shle said
“The scene of crime was visited by a joint team of police and UPDF officers led by DPC Koboko. SPC Yosa Poru was rescued and rushed to Koboko health centre 4 for treatment but was later transferred to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for better management. Statements were recorded from the relevant witnesses,” she said
Angucia noted that a search was conducted on the body of the deceased and at the scene from, “where some documents, exhibits of the claw harmer and UPF Riffle with 30 rounds of ammunitions which was grabbed by the deceased were all recovered and exhibited,”
“Riffle number UPDF-56-56032451 with 28 rounds of ammunitions were recovered and stored under UPDF armoury at Koboko Baracks. The body of the deceased was found with a bullet wound on the forehead, lying on ground about 110 metres away from URA offices of Koboko, and it was conveyed to Koboko health centre 4 Mortuary for Postmortem,” she said
Some witness on the ground, Angucia said, alleged that Ngota, the deceased has a background of UPDF training though escaped from Course and hid in Iganga and now had returned to claim his share of family property.
This is the second attack on the office of URA in Koboko in a span of seven months.
In March 2022, a similar incident occured when the Offices were attacked by the mob, burning them and leaving one person dead.
Angucia said that a General Enquiry File number 014/2022 has been opened to conduct inquiries surrounding the attack, shooting and death incident in Koboko district.
“As investigations continue, we urge officers who are deployed to do guard duties to be security conscious and vigilant of the human beings and objects around their beats in order to prevent such deadly attacks,”
