In a series of controversial posts on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and commander of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces, issued a stern warning directed at the US Ambassador to Uganda HE William W. Popp.

General Kainerugaba claimed that the ambassador had disrespected the president and undermined the constitution of Uganda.

“Fellow Ugandans, it is my solemn duty to announce to you all that we as a nation are about to have a serious confrontation with the current US Ambassador to our country,” he wrote.

In his posts, Kainerugaba stressed that this was not a personal conflict but a matter of national pride, stating, “It is not only General MK. It is President Museveni, the government, and the people of Uganda too. This is not a personal issue… no foreign country will ever dominate Uganda again!”

He further demanded that the US Ambassador issue a personal apology to President Museveni by Monday morning or face expulsion from the country. “If this current US Ambassador does not apologize to Mzee personally by Monday morning (9.00am)… we will demand he leaves Uganda,” the general added.

While reiterating his admiration for the United States, Kainerugaba accused the US of working against Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM). He also issued a stark warning against any foreign interference, saying, “If ANYBODY is STUPID enough to attack us here in our country. I can only promise them hell, destruction, and defeat!!”

The posts have drawn widespread attention, with many concerned about the potential implications for Uganda’s diplomatic relations with the United States. As of now, there has been no official response from the US Embassy in Uganda.

By press time the United States mission in Uganda hadn’t issued any statement on this matter.
