Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has unveiled a 36-man provisional squad for the upcoming 2024 TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place from February 1 to 21, 2025.

The squad, comprising players exclusively from local clubs, includes four goalkeepers, twelve defenders, ten midfielders, and ten forwards.

The provisional roster features talent from prominent Ugandan clubs such as KCCA FC, SC Villa, Vipers SC, Bul FC, and Express FC, among others. The selection reflects Coach Put’s strategy to harness homegrown talent for the continental tournament.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Coach Put outlined the team’s preparation plans, emphasizing that the initial three days of training will focus on player assessment. The squad will then be trimmed down to 26 players ahead of the championship.

“We will use Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to evaluate the players and reduce the group to 26. Those who do not make the final cut will continue to follow our program to ensure they remain ready for any future call-ups,” Put stated.

The coach also highlighted the inclusion of several young players in the provisional squad, expressing optimism about their potential to make an impact. “We have seen players of that age feature for the senior national team before. This is an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their abilities and compete for a place in the team,” he added.

The 2024 CHAN tournament, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, marks a historic moment for East African football. A total of 19 teams from across the continent will compete in the championship, which is exclusively for players active in their respective domestic leagues.

The official draw for the tournament is scheduled to take place on January 15, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya. Football fans across the region are eagerly anticipating the event, which promises to showcase the best of African domestic talent.

As the Uganda Cranes begin their preparations, the nation’s hopes are high for a strong performance on home soil.

The final 26-man squad is expected to be announced following the assessment phase, with the team aiming to make a deep run in the tournament.
