Police confirmed arresting Mubiru, after Ham reported a defamation Case against him.
“A general inquiry file was opened at Kiira Division to investigate allegations that he defamed Mr. Hamis Kiggundu in his various publications,” SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson said in a press statement.
Mubiru, Onyango said was informed about the allegations/charges and he agreed to settle the matter amicably with the complainant.
“He met the complainant and the Detectives who were investigating the case. The complainant agreed that he would withdraw the case on the advice of Police,” he said adding,
“The detectives advice that since the complainant made a statement at Police, Mr. Mubiru’s statement also be recorded.
Mr. Mubiru agreed to report to police but later changed his mind,”
Police, he said has been trying to trace for him until today when he was arrested.
Upon his arrest, Emmanuel Kirunda the Secretary General of the Uganda Journalist Association said that Mubiru had been arrested because he annoyed the first family, after he fired a question on ongoing abductions to president Museveni during the media engagement last week.
State House spokesperson Sandor Walusimbi said this was not true because the first family hadd nothing with his arrest.
Onyango also refuted the statement saying this had nothing to do with the presidential media engagement.
“Uganda Journalists Association should not drag the name of the president in Mr. Mubiru’s case,” he said
Mubiru’s statement, he said will be recorded and the file will be submitted to State Attorney for perusal and legal advice.
