As schools across the country reopened for the first term on Monday, the Traffic Police have issued a set of guidelines aimed at ensuring the safety of students on the roads. SP Kananura Michael, the Traffic Police spokesperson, emphasized the need for all road users to exercise caution, discipline, and patience to ensure a safe and successful academic term.
Kananura urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, particularly in urban areas, and stressed the importance of ensuring that schoolchildren wear helmets when using motorcycles. He also called on parents and guardians to accompany young children to and from school, use reliable and safe school transport services, and educate students on road safety practices.
“Parents and guardians should teach children to stay alert and avoid distractions while walking or crossing the roads. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we must all play our part to protect our children,” Kananura stated during a press briefing at the Police Headquarters in Kampala.
Update on Fatal Road Accident Along Kitukutwe-Kiwologoma-Nakwero Road
During the same briefing, SP Kananura provided an update on the tragic road accident that occurred on February 2 along the Kitukutwe-Kiwologoma-Nakwero road, which claimed the life of Taka Florence, the wife of Hon. Julius Maganda. According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 5:00 PM and involved two vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that Florence’s vehicle, a Toyota Harrier, had pulled over to the side of the road, and she had stepped out to load food items. Tragically, the driver of a Toyota Premio traveling in the same direction lost control and collided with the stationary Toyota Harrier, pinning Florence between the two vehicles. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
Kananura revealed that the driver and co-driver of the Toyota Premio were both police officers attached to Kira Police Station. They sustained injuries in the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment. Both vehicles have been towed to Kira Division Police Station as investigations into the accident begin.
The Police spokesperson extended heartfelt condolences to Hon. Julius Maganda, his family, and friends, expressing sympathy for their loss.
“We urge all road users to exercise extreme caution, especially during this back-to-school period, to prevent such tragic incidents. Let us work together to ensure the safety of everyone on the road,” Kananura concluded.
The Traffic Police’s guidelines and the tragic accident serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety as schools resume and traffic increases across the country.
