Who is Hon Asuman Basalirwa a Man who will Battle with Uganda’s Giant NRM Party to Replace Oulanyah

Today, all roads shall head to Lokolo ceremonial grounds, where the President and Chief Justice will preside over the election of the Speaker and his or her Deputy to fill the vacancies that were created by the deceased Jacob Oulanyah and Anita Among who resigned in her seat.

So far the Speakership race is having two main candidates; Anita Among the former Deputy Speaker and JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwa who will be battling for votes.

NRM with a majority of over 300 MPs backed Among and Thomas Tayebwa on the two positions while Opposition which commands below 200 MPs fronted Basalirwa and Moses Okot.

Basalirwa a lawyer by profession trounced his competitor Odir Jonathan to win the opposition card yesterday, we bring you a brief about his life.

Basalirwa is a politician and member of the 11th parliament representing Bugiri Municipality
He was born on November 17, 1977, in the current-day Bugiri district.

He earned his First School Leaving Certificate from Mwiri Primary School in 1991, and Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), in 1996, and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) from Kiira College Butiki in 1998.

He holds a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (LDC) Kampala, Uganda in 2004.

In 2008, Basalirwa finished from Pretoria University with a Certificate in International Humanitarian Law and a Master of Laws from Makerere University in 2015. He’s a Lawyer/Partner at Sewankambo & Co. Advocates.

He is the president of the Justice Forum (JEEMA) from 2010 to date.

He is the Chairperson of the Inter-Party Organisation on Dialogue (IPOD).

Basalirwa was elected to the parliament in 2018 and was re-elected in the 2021 general election to represent Bugiri Municipality.

He serves as the Deputy Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament.
