1,021 Boda Boda Riders lost their lives to road carnages between January and September, Police have revealed.
This literally means that three Boda Boda Riders Died on a daily basis in 270 days which translates into nine months.
ASP Farida Nampiima the Traffic Police spokesperson said that an additional 401 passengers also lost their lives on the road carnages, in the same period.
“We urge all motorcycle riders on the roads to follow the right lanes, respect the rules of the road, be patient on road, and don’t forget to wear your helmet always. safety is your responsibility,” she said.
Nampiima’s report statement comes a few days after Police launched an operation that is aimed at restoring the sanity of Boda Boda riders in the whole country.
In eight days of the operations, Nampiima said 12,217 boda bodas have been impounded countrywide.
10,167 of these, she said were issued with express penalty scheme tickets and allowed to continue with their journeys.
“The operations will continue until we realize the discipline on the road by boda bodas has improved,” she said
“We shall continue targeting those without reflector jackets and crash helmets,” she added
“This country has laws that need to be complied with. I don’t think anyone criticizing our operations will be happy with the figures that show 1021 riders dead in nine months after crashing their heads for having no helmets and 401 passengers killed during the same period. Anyone who wants to take us to court is free to do so but we have laws to enforce,”
The figure is a few numbers away from the 1,918 total fatalities that were registered in 2021.
The 2021 Annual Crime and Traffic/Road Safety report indicated that a total of 2,393 people sustained injuries due to accidents caused by boda-boda cyclists.
