The Commander of Land Forces Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has lashed out at former army commander; Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu for criticizing his intentions to pursue politics without retiring from the Army.
This followed Muntu’s Monday Twitter posts asking Muhoozi to with respect retire from military service before declaring his political ambitions urging that double footing both in politics and army tarnishes the Force’s hardly built reputation.
“Use the same insight to ask the CIC(commander in chief) to retire you from the army as you pursue your political Agenda. It is legitimate. However, respect the officers and men in Uniforms. NRA/ UPDF has been built through many sacrifices. Welcome to politics but get out of uniform first,” Muntu tweeted on Monday.
Museveni claimed that he is among the architects of a democratic system that was established in Uganda in 1960 saying this has effectively worked and there’s no need to lecture him on democracy, especially by foreigners.
In response to the retired Military General, Lt Gen Muhoozi said Muntu has no moral authority to lecture him on any matter thus advising him to reserve the advice for his ‘collapsing’ Political Party.
“Secondly, me, my father, and practically everybody else in UPDF do not require your ‘insight’ into anything. Please keep it for yourself and your small collapsing political party,” Lt Gen Muhoozi tweeted.
In the same internet war between the two citizens, the Commander of the Land Forces seemed to suggest that Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu who served as army commander from 1989-to 1998 should have not been named but rather Col Jet Mwebaze should have been Prioritised.
“I wish my father had made Colonel Jet Mwebaze, army commander after Afande Saleh in 1989. He was a great commander for sure!,” said Muhoozi.
Muntu also fought back in equal measures saying that had the first son been soberly reading then he would have understood whatever he was being lectured on.
“I think if you were to soberly reread my initial remarks, you will find that I referred to your “insight”, not mine. Also, it is “do not need” not does not need. I wasn’t under the impression that my opinion was “required”. I gave it anyway,”Muntu said.
Several politicians, especially from the opposition have in the past blasted Lt Gen Muhoozi, a serving army officer for openly participating in politics, contrary to provisions of the military and the country’s constitution.
“His remarks and printing of campaign T-shirts for the 2026 general elections is an outright campaign that should make Muhoozi a candidate for the general court martial but because he is a son of Museveni, his crimes against the Constitution are instead being cheered on by the whole military leadership and cabinet ministers,” FDC spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said recently.
