Another batch of Ugandan nationals trapped in war-torn is expected back in the country any moment, Uganda’s ambassador to Khartoum H.E Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu (Phd) has disclosed.
The envoy who returned along with other 208 Ugandan evacuees last week told this news site that a total of 11 Ugandan nationals are in the process of evacuation in collaboration with the Embassy of Kenya in Sudan, in the spirit of the East African Community.
The 11 (names withheld) include six (6) females and five (5) males.
“The evacuees left Sudan May 1, 2023, aboard buses together with Kenyan evacuees from Araak City in Sudan via Wonthou border in South Sudan. The evacuees shall travel through Poloshi Airstrip from where they are expected to fly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, before their final leg to Uganda,” he explained.
He said this latest arrangement has been made possible with the able guidance and support of HE President Museveni, and the government of Uganda.
According to Dr Ssemuddu, the latest evacuation has reduced the number of Ugandans still held up in Sudan.
“As per our records, the numbers have now gone down to 13, including 8 from the Ugandan community, 3 undergoing treatment at the Cardiac Centre of Al Salaam Hospital Khartoum, and two (2 ) of their caregivers.
The Embassy of Uganda in Khartoum, Sudan has so far issued temporary travel documents to 60 Ugandan evacuees who had no passports. This includes evacuees among the 208 who returned on April 21, 2023, and an additional 7: including 5 who travelled through Chad, 1 through the Sudan-Egypt border, and 1 among evacuees returning through Nairobi, via South Sudan.
For the record, Ugandan evacuees have used border crossings to all the countries neighbouring Sudan, except Libya, in their effort to get to safety,
“The Embassy is in the process of making arrangements to evacuate the remaining Ugandans back home, as soon as circumstances permit.
The ambassador further noted that updates shall be made as soon as new developments on the ground are relayed through our local contacts and network of associates in Sudan.
