Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition and spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has strongly criticized the conduct of Kawempe Police Division Commander (DPC), Muwonge, for failing to address their concerns despite repeated requests for police intervention.

Ssenyonyi recounted that after receiving reports of suspicious activities at a private residence in Nameere from several residents, NUP officials rushed to the scene to investigate and engage the occupants peacefully.

However, upon arrival, men dressed in army uniforms and plain clothes allegedly brandished firearms, fired shots into the air, and caused a commotion that left NUP’s Secretary General and Spark TV cameraperson Steven Kibwika injured. Ssenyonyi described the incident as clear evidence of criminal activity.

“The DPC initially welcomed us but failed to address our concerns. We requested that he accompany us to the scene with police officers to assess the situation, but to our dismay, neither he nor the OC CID took any action. Shortly after, the DPC disappeared, confirming our suspicion that he was aware of what was happening and deliberately chose not to act,” Ssenyonyi explained.

NUP alleges that the private residence in Nameere contained pre-ticked ballots ahead of Thursday’s by-election for the Kawempe North constituency in Kampala District.

Ssenyonyi accused Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja of orchestrating the alleged vote-rigging scheme, claiming she is behind the plot as a resident of Kawempe. He also dismissed her earlier claims that NUP leaders were involved in ballot pre-ticking as a diversionary tactic.

“We have uncovered their plan and are determined to thwart it. Nabbanja and her allies are desperate because they know the people’s support is with us,” Ssenyonyi asserted.

NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya also expressed concern over the police’s conduct, warning that the world is watching. He emphasized that NUP members are Ugandan citizens who deserve equal treatment and protection under the law.

“The NRM is desperate because they know public support is against them. They are attempting to rig the election, but we are vigilant and ready to resist,” Rubongoya stated.

Erias Nalukoola, NUP’s aspiring candidate for Kawempe North, recounted being attacked and threatened during the incident but remained confident of victory. He called on Ugandans to defend democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

“I urge the residents of Kawempe and all Ugandans to stand up and protect our democracy. It is unacceptable that the Electoral Commission remains silent while we are subjected to such treatment. This is a regrettable moment for our nation,” Nalukoola said.

The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the upcoming by-election and the role of security forces in ensuring a fair electoral process. NUP has vowed to continue its efforts to expose and resist any attempts to undermine the democratic process.
