Mbale Schools Decry High Commodity Prices

Schools in Mbale City have decried the high prices of commodities. Among the Commodities that have had a hike in prices is Fuel where a liter of petrol goes up to 5220, A liter of Cooking Oil at 10.000 shillings, a bar of soap at 8.000 and a kilo of sugar at 4000 shillings.

Moses Buyera the Headteacher of Mbale SS told this news outlet that the increase in prices has burdened the school administration has been a few months out of lockdown and they hadn’t recovered fully.

Buyera also noted that Government prohibited the Senior three students from paying school fees since they studied for a very short time. He noted that this has created a deficit in the planning and budgeting of the schools.

He also noted that the welfare of the teachers has gone down since schools can’t sustain good feeding and provide allowances to the teachers.

Malik Wasukira Deputy Headteacher Nkoma SS noted that the increase in Fuel has led to absenteeism in school since transport fairs have gone up.

He also noted that students also walk home early as they can no longer afford transport.

He also revealed that there is an increase in crime rate in school like theft since students can’t afford the basic needs of education like books pens, sets calculators. He noted that some students simply have one book where they combine all the subjects.
