Rwanda has finally announced that it will reopen the Gatuna border with Uganda on Monday, January 31, 2022, next week.
This comes a few days after the meeting of President Paul Kagame with Uganda’s Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Operations and Commander of Land Forces.
“Following the visit to Rwanda of Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Operations and Commander of Land Forces of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) on 22nd January 2022,” Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement,
Rwanda said in a statement that it has taken note that there is a process to solve issues raised by Rwanda, as well as commitments made by the Government of Uganda to address remaining obstacles.
The two countries dived into a stalemate three years ago when Rwanda accused Uganda of arresting its citizens.
They majorly accused Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho the CMI Boss for masterminding all these kidnaps.
President Museveni on January 25, replaced Gen. Kandiho with James Birungi. He (Kandiho) was deployed in Sudan.
“The Government of Rwanda remains committed to ongoing efforts to resolve pending issues between Rwanda and Uganda and believes that today’s announcement will contribute positively to the speedy normalization of relations between the two countries,” the statement noted.
