Mbale: Deadly Storm Ravage 95 Homes, Secondary School

Residents of Namabasa Ward in the Northern Division in Mbale City are counting losses and others homeless after Namabasa Secondary School and homes were hit by a storm destroying crops and property worth millions.

Namabasa Secondary School the only one in the area was left without the roof after strong winds lifted off the roof and dropped it a kilometer away from the school location.

Yusuf Ahmad the Headteacher Namabasa SS confirmed to DaParrot that the school that has been teaching students from the neighboring sub-counties and beyond is no more as the storm last night left them in open space with nowhere to teach their children.

He appealed to the ministry of disaster preparedness under if Prime Minister’s office to take immediate action and help renovate the school so that children can go back to class.

Ministry of finance this is the time to take up this position and aid this school otherwise the state of affairs if left unaddressed may have far-reaching consequences‘ He noted.

We need to secure the future of these Ugandans.‘ He added.

Rashid Wangaya a local leader and area councilor revealed that the deadly act happened for just 5 minutes.

The rain came with the wind that destroyed people’s homes and our School Namabasa SS in Just 5 minutes‘ He noted.

So we appeal to the Government to reach a helping hand to the affected people and also renovate our school because this school has helped children in this area a lot, it’s just started but it’s very crucial to us.’ He added.

Siraji Ikaya, A religious leader in the area described the storm as disastrous and hailed the shortness of time the storm took to destroy the School and homes plus property.

We were greatly shocked last evening when a disastrous storm accompanied by lightning in a very short time lifted off the roof of our school and dropped it in A distance equivalent to one kilometer but we were lucky not to have lost any child because they were out of class by that time and no one was injured. ‘ He noted.

Aliyu bin Salim a resident of the area confessed that his wife was badly hit by the wall that collapsed on her but luckily she survived but sustained serious injuries.
