President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday hosted United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, H.E. Huang Xia, at State House Entebbe to discuss pressing regional challenges and cooperation.
Key topics of their meeting included the ongoing security and humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and preparations for the forthcoming Regional Oversight Mechanism (ROM) summit, a critical platform under the Peace, Security, and Cooperation Framework for the region.
President Museveni confirmed Uganda’s commitment to hosting the next ROM summit in May 2025, with specific dates to be announced in due course. The summit will convene regional leaders to address shared priorities, including conflict resolution, political stability, and cross-border collaboration.
The previous ROM summit, chaired by Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, underscored collective efforts to advance peace in the Great Lakes region. The 2025 gathering aims to build on these initiatives, reinforcing multilateral partnerships to tackle persistent threats to stability.
H.E. Huang Xia commended Uganda’s proactive role in regional diplomacy and reaffirmed the UN’s support for inclusive dialogue and sustainable solutions. Both leaders emphasized the urgency of de-escalating tensions in the DRC and enhancing economic integration to foster long-term development.
The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to strengthen coordination between Uganda, regional bodies, and the United Nations in pursuit of lasting peace across the Great Lakes.
