Kituuma Rusoke, the Police spokesperson, has urged parents to always accompany their children when they interact with strangers, service providers, and even relatives, in light of recent alarming incidents.

This warning comes after a case of aggravated defilement was reported in the Savannah Region, Luweero District, on September 1, in Kizito Zone, Luweero Town Council.

According to Kituuma, it is alleged that on August 22, a 12-year-old girl, whose identity is withheld, fell ill and was taken by her grandmother to Sheikh Mohammed Uthuman for herbal treatment. The girl is a pupil at Esteem Nursery and Primary School and resides in Galuweero Zone, Luweero Town Council.

The sheikh informed the grandmother that the treatment would last for six days. During each session, the grandmother would wait outside while the sheikh treated the victim alone. It is alleged that during the treatment, the sheikh instructed the girl to undress and lie on a mat while he applied herbal medicine around her waist.

“On the sixth day, the sheikh reportedly applied herbs to the victim’s private parts and then defiled her, claiming he was expelling demons,” Kituuma stated.

The victim initially confided in her grandmother about the abuse but was dismissed. Her grandmother spoke favorably about the sheikh, discouraging the child from seeking further help.

However, the girl later confided in her headteacher, who took her seriously and alerted her father. This led to a police report being filed on September 6, according to Kituuma.

Police have since arrested the suspect, and he is currently being prepared for prosecution.

The police continue to emphasize the importance of parents and guardians being vigilant and present during their children’s interactions with strangers to prevent such tragic incidents.
