Fred Enanga the Police spokesperson has revealed that the Police Special Investigation Division in Kireka has actively started investigating the death threats that were directed to the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anita Among.
After putting a ban on the famous Nyege – Nyege festival in Parliament last week, the Speaker later revealed that she was getting phone calls and messages from strangers threatening to take her life.
“The position of Speaker is a very important position that would have enormous consequences to the country and Parliamentarians if any risks occur” Enanga elaborated.
Enanga made these remarks when addressing journalists on Monday during the weekly security briefing at the Police headquarters in Naguru Kampala.
The Police mouthpiece also noted that they are working hand in hand with intelligence, investigative and operational sister security agencies plus the office of the Speaker to identify the source of the threats
.“Although there is much interest from the media about the investigations, we shall not elaborate on where about of the threats until we have thoroughly come up with the findings” Enanga articulated.
Confident Enanga also added that the Police directorate of counter-terrorism will continue to monitor the security detail of the Speaker to ensure that the all-around protection of bodyguards stays vigilant at all levels of her movement.
Enanga also updated the public on the operations in the Karamoja region where he noted that they had seven operation raids were made and they successfully rescued 8 guns and 27 ammunitions.
“Since July 2021, the total guns recovered have increased to 537, the ammunitions to 3,629, 11,757 personnel have so far been arrested, 487 killed and 25,951 livestock have been rescued which is a big achievement” Enanga highlighted.
In this briefing, Police also noted that the situation in Kisoro district remains calm as joint security teams continue to deploy along the border lines and make operations on illegal asylum seekers.
The Uganda Police emphasized that they have been having an extension joint verification mechanism under the African Union that has been monitoring the security situation in the area and also removing illegal asylum seekers in the area.
The Police called upon the public and its officers to create more awareness of the dangers of harboring the asylum seekers as this not only sabotages government efforts to provide for them, but also creates pressure on local resources available such as security, food, and water.
The Police also thanked all stakeholders involved in the efforts put together in ensuring the safety and security of these asylum seekers.
The war between the security operatives of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebels led many asylum seekers to flee from Congo to Uganda to save their lives.
