Police has reported on Thursday that 113 people remain missing following the devastating mudslides in Bulambuli District but rescue efforts are ongoing, though progress is hindered by challenging conditions.
On Thursday, the country was shaken by reports that more than ten bodies had been retrieved after torrential rains triggered the mudslides on November 27.
The disaster has since left widespread devastation across five villages in Buluganya Sub-County Masugu, Namachele, Natola, Namagugu, and Tagalu.
Police noted that alongside other security agencies and local communities, they have intensified rescue operations. However, the efforts are being significantly hampered by impassable roads, which are blocking ambulances and heavy equipment like wheel loaders from reaching the affected areas.
“So far, 15 injured survivors have been rescued and admitted to Buluganya Health Center III for treatment,” they highlighted.
John Cliff Wamala, Communications Officer for the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), revealed that the landslides completely buried 40 households while partially damaging others.
“As a National Society, we remain vigilant, delivering early warning messages through community radio networks and providing timely support to those affected,” Wamala stated.
The URCS, in collaboration with other stakeholders, continues to play a key role in mitigating the impact of such disasters by delivering early warnings and providing emergency assistance.
