The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially endorsed city lawyer Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election. The seat became vacant following the tragic passing of legislator Muhammad Ssegirinya in January 2025.

Nalukoola emerged victorious from a competitive field of ten candidates vying for the party’s nomination. In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the party leadership, supporters, and the people of Kawempe North for their unwavering trust and support.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to the party, under the leadership of Robert Kyagulanyi, and the electoral management committee for conducting this historic exercise. I also thank my family, supporters, well-wishers, and the people of Kawempe North who have walked this journey with us. Your belief in our mission fuels our determination,” Nalukoola stated.

The newly endorsed candidate emphasized that his nomination represents a call to service and a commitment to stand with the people of Kawempe North, who, like many Ugandans, have endured decades of what he described as “misrule and dictatorship” under President Yoweri Museveni’s 39-year administration.

“This is a trail to enhance our unity as a party, embody our brand as NUP, and live the values we preach. I am ready to play a fundamental role in working with the people to face our adversaries as a unified force. Divided we fall, but united we stand,” Nalukoola asserted.

When asked about the challenge of filling the shoes of the late legislator Ssegirinya, Nalukoola responded with humility, quoting Archbishop Ssemwogerere: “A good leader’s shoes aren’t too big for another to fit.” He added, “I may not fit into his shoes, but I will wear my own shoes to serve the people of Kawempe North with dedication and integrity.”

Nalukoola will face off against other contenders, including FDC’s Mukiibi Sadat and NRM’s Hajjat Faridah Nambi, in what promises to be a closely watched by-election. According to the Electoral Commission, the by-election is scheduled for March 13, 2025, following a series of activities, including candidate nominations, voter register displays, and campaign rallies.

The Kawempe North by-election is expected to be a critical test for NUP as it seeks to consolidate its influence in the region and beyond. Political analysts predict a highly competitive race, with all eyes on Nalukoola’s ability to rally support and deliver on his promises of unity and service.

As the campaign season heats up, the people of Kawempe North await a leader who will champion their needs and aspirations in Parliament.
