No More Exporting Ugandans to Saudi Arabia – Gov’t Orders Labour Recruitment Companies

Government has through the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) ordered all labour recruitment Agencies to put a stop on sending Ugandans to Saudi Arabia.

Aggrey Kibenge, the permanent secretary of MGLSD in the December 23 letter, informed all the companies that it has suspended the bilateral labour agreement (BLA) with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“You are aware that the BLA with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is due to expire on 27th December, 2022,” reads part of the letter.

“You are also aware of the challenges that have persisted during its implementation In accordance with Article 10 of the BLA on Domestic Workers between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Uganda, the BLA be suspended with effect from 23rd December 2022 pending re-negotiation of the Agreement,” it adds.

The government furthermore said  the same Article 10 provides that suspension/termination shall be without prejudice to the individual employment contracts existing at the time of suspension/termination. 

“This is therefore to inform you that clearance and deployment of migrant workers. approval of job orders and training of migrant workers under this Agreement are suspended with immediate effect,” the letter reads.

The development come at a time when several Ugandans are suffering in the hands of tyrant employers in middle east countries.

“Note, however, that this temporary suspension does not affect migrant workers whose travel had already been cleared by the Ministry, prior to this date, and are in possession of signed contracts, travel tickets and entry visas,” the letter adds.

“Any inconveniences caused are highly regretted. We will, however, endeavor to work with all relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure a quick resolution of all the outstanding issues,”
