Government is set to establish another independent body similar to the National Drug Authority (NDA), that will regulate food, plant and animal health.
This was revealed by Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance at the media centre.
“Cabinet approved a paper that was presented by the Ministry of Health to make principal amendment of the National Drug Policy and Authority Act,” he said
“The ammendment will lead to establishment of the new authority called the Food, Animal and Plant Health Authority, which will specifically regulate food, veterinary medicines,” he added.
Among these will include among others: veterinary vaccines, veterinary devices, veterinary cosmetics, agrochemicals and all other therapeutic products for plant and animal health.
He noted that the authority will be established under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.
NDA will only regulate human medicines, vaccines, medical devices, invitro diagnostics, public health products and nutritional supplements, and a new body will be established to regulate plant and animal health.
โUNBS will regulate all other products except those regulated by NDA and the proposed Food, Animal and Plant Health Agency and any other specialized agency as established by law. UNBS remains a custodian of standards in accordance with the law,โ said the minister.
