President Museveni has approved the resignation of former Government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa ahead of the highly contested Speaker and Deputy Speaker race today.
Tayebwa, the Ruhinda North who will be battling with opposition’s Moses Okot P’Bitek Junior the Kioga County MP on who will replace the former Deputy Speaker Anita Among sent in his resignation yesterday.
“I have received your letter in respect to your resignation from the position of Government Chief Whip following your endorsement as the NRM flag bearer for the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament,” President Museveni said Inna March 24 letter seen by DaParrot.
“I hereby accept your resignation. I wish to thank you for the service rendered to the Country during your term office. I wish you victory in the elections and good luck in your new endeavors,” he added
Deputy Speaker post became vacant when Hon Among stood to replace her Boss, Jacob Oulanyah who died from Seattle USA on Sunday.
Among the ongoing polls is battling opposition’s Asuman Basalirwa in a much anticipated Speakership race.
Among those who were unanimously endorsed by the ruling National Resistance Movement Parliamentary Caucus today Thursday, first received the same endorsement yesterday by the party’s top body, the Central Executive Committee led by President Museveni.
Asuman Basalirwa on the other hand was also picked by the opposition after trouncing his Erute South counterpart Jonathan Odur in an election held by the Opposition Parliamentary Caucus.
Basalirwa got 49 votes against Odur’s 20 Inna highly contested polls.
In the same development, NRM’s Ruhinda North legislator and the former Government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa will battle with opposition’s Moses Okot P’Bitek Junior the Kioga County MP on who will replace Among.
NRM currently has the majority number with over 300 MPs and its independent leaning, while the opposition has below 200.
However Francis Zaake the Mityana municipality legislator said that they have the power of winning the polls today.
“”It is Possible with the Boycotting Northern Uganda MPs(120) + United opposition front(104) + opposition leaning independents & some MPs from Busoga (80) = 304 votes. Our Speaker Basalirwa & his Deputy will make this Mathematics practical,” Hon Zaake said.
