President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda embarked on a pivotal working visit to Juba this week, engaging in high-level discussions with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir to address pressing regional challenges and bolster bilateral ties. The visit, marked by a shared commitment to peace and economic collaboration, underscored the deepening partnership between the two nations.
The leaders initiated their dialogue with a private one-on-one meeting, followed by expanded bilateral talks focused on security, socio-economic development, and regional politics. Central to the discussions was South Sudan’s security climate, with President Kiir providing Museveni an update on the implementation of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement. South Sudan’s government reiterated its dedication to fulfilling the accord, a critical step toward lasting stability after years of conflict.
On the economic front, both nations agreed to align trade policies, targeting the reduction of non-tariff barriers and streamlining taxation for cross-border small-scale commodities. Uganda’s Minister of State for Regional Affairs, Hon. John Mulimba, highlighted the productive nature of the talks, stating, “Our discussions centered on mutual benefits in trade, commerce, and regional security. This partnership is vital for fostering prosperity and peace.”
The delegation included Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, and Defence Minister Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth, alongside key South Sudanese officials. The presence of high-ranking representatives signaled the strategic importance of the talks, which aimed to translate dialogue into actionable frameworks for cross-border cooperation.
President Museveni’s visit not only reinforced diplomatic ties but also highlighted the interconnected challenges and opportunities facing East Africa. As both nations navigate post-conflict recovery and economic integration, their collaboration sets a precedent for regional solidarity in addressing shared priorities.
