Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke has blamed the recent invasion of her residence by unidentified machete thugs on the government’s failure to protect opposition politicians.
According to Nambooze, despite appearing on a list of people marked for assassination, she has never received any security protection.
“There have been lists making rounds with my name on it of people that are going to be killed…. As one of the people on the list, I have never received any security detail to protect me from the wannabe assassins,” she said on Tuesday.
Nambooze raised the concerns after unidentified machete-wielding thugs sneaked into her residence at Nakabago cell, Ntawo ward, Mukono municipality in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, and threatened to kill her.
“I was preparing to head to Kampala for a shadow cabinet meeting when an unidentified man stormed my bedroom and ordered me to say my last prayer as he had come to kill me,” she said.
According to Nambooze, if the attackers wanted to intimidate and scare her, they successfully achieved their mission because at a certain point, she surrendered to fate.
“The man came into our bedroom while my husband was in the living room praying. He asked me to kneel down and make my last prayer before he could kill me as that was his mission,” she said.
Some family sources indicate that 3 assailants, wearing black coats and armed with machetes entered their compound at around 5 am. One of the attackers was seen waiting by the motorcycle while the other watched at the gate.
Robert Namugira who had come to meet the legislator for official business says that the assailants could have waited for Nambooze’s guard to leave before they gained access to the house.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Oweyesigire, says investigations into the raid have commenced.
“The territorial police is investigating the attack at Hon. Betty Nambooze’s home and as per preliminary findings, two brand new pangas were discovered from the fence near a tomato garden to the legislator’s home,” he said.
