The Member of Parliament(MP) for Bubulo East Constituency in Namisindwa district Hon. John Musila has been re-elected as chairperson of Uganda Cooperative Transport Union (UCTU).

The elections that took place during the Annual General Assembly (AGM) held at Tick Hotel kawempe in Kampala were presided over by the Minister of State for Cooperatives at the Ministry of Trade Industry and cooperatives Hon Frederick Ngobi Gume and the Commissioner Cooperatives Development Mr.Bob Barigye

Upon his re-election as the Chairperson of the Union, Musila applauded the board Members of UCTU for the confidence that they have invested in him to serve as the 11th Chairperson of the Union for the 2nd consecutive term.

I am truly honored and proud to be the head of this mighty institution“. Musila said.

Therefore I commit myself without reservation, that I will work tirelessly to champion the cause of UCTU, to steward its mission, and to strengthen and secure its future” Musila assured.

It should be remembered that Musila John was first elected as the UCTU chairperson in 2018 for his first term replacing Mr. Bayigana in 2018.

In 1973, the Uganda Co-operative Transport Union was formed, following the exodus of the Asian community. Starting with just seven trucks, the UCTU transported crops from district cooperatives to marketing boards, processing centers, and ports for export.

The liberalization of the Ugandan economy saw UCTU’s market share fall from 60 percent to just ten percent. The much-talked-about revival of the co-operatives by the government could hugely boost UCTU’s business.

But now, the UCTU boasts 53 trucks. On top of that, they manage 43 trucks and 15 trailers for the World Food Programme (WFP), as their major customer.

UCTU now operates in Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, and Kenya. UCTU boosts with 140 workers, of whom 80 are drivers and their customers also include government, UPDF, Kampala City Council, National Agricultural Organisation, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Revenue Authority.

UCTU is one of the four ‘Tertiary cooperative unions’ in Uganda and a member of the Uganda Cooperative Alliance, UCA. Other tertiary unions are Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union, the Uganda Insurance Cooperative Union, and the Uganda Cooperative bank.
