The Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Mr. Mathias Mpuuga, and members of Parliament from NUP on August 4, 2022, were in Mbale City for the assessment tour and delivering their relief items to families affected.

Mr. Mpuuga accused police and other security agencies of failing to handle the situation.

According to LOP, the deaths would have been avoided if police and other security agencies were vigilant enough to block roads to stop traffic floor on the roads that were submerged by the floods.

“The OPM should be advised to manage only beans and posho but not the whole process of the disaster,” Mpuuga said.

On water shortages in the City Mpuuga said the government instead of stocking water tanks they have stocked teargas for the opposition.

Opposition Chief Whip John Baptist Nambeshe MP Manjiya constituency in Bududa district says that the locals who used rudimentary tools to retrieve bodies and cars from the river are our heroes.

“If our NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi was to appear here the police would have blocked him in jinja,” Nambeshe said.

Mbale Industrial city division MP Masaba Karim says that the Emergency response is decentralized. Those in OPM just come here to be in hospitals and enjoy government resources.

Masaba noted that there’s a problem of water shortage in the City and we need agent intervention.

Mbale City mayor Namugali Cassim said that the situation is pathetic we received few relief items and many people were not captured.

Namugali added, that the situation could get worse since many roads are impassable and there are limited sources of safe drinking water which are also under threat by sewage from destroyed pit latrines.
