Mak Research Journey; Prof Nawangwe Recommits as University Announces New Masters Programs

Makerere University has announced that it will effective next academic year, introduce new Masters’ Programs.

Among these are; Masters in Kiswahili, French and Chinese Languages.

The introduction of the programs was announced by Dr. Sauda Namyalo, the Dean of the School of Humanities during the celebrations of the 100 years achievements of the School of Languages, Literature and Communication at Makerere University Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility on Friday.

“We shall also transform the Masters in Journalism into Masters in Journalism and Communication and all this is done to strengthen Makerere University’s research journey,” she said

Speaking at the function, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University was represented by Assoc. Prof. Josephine Anikire, the Principal School of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (ChUSS) recommitted to driving Makerere University into a fully research-led University in the next century.

Prof. Nawangwe believes that for a University to have an impact on the community, it should be doing direct human-impact research and innovations that will solve the daily problems of the masses.

“We have been doing research but now we want to make it a Strategy,” he said 

Makerere among its 2021-30, strategy is to be a full research and innovative University so as to not only compete on an international scale but as well solve the problems of communities around it.

“This means that a University of that nature has to strengthen its graduate programs because it’s at this level that you produce fully skilled University graduates, you continue to build that capacity of critical thinkers and also make innovations that solve human predicaments,” he said 

“As a University, you continue to enrich the curriculum and as Makerere, our next century is to become a true research-led University,” he added 

The school of languages, literature and communication was started in 2012, under the college system with five departments and an oriental Institute.

The departments Include; Literature, Journalism, African Languages, Linguistics, and Communication.

The celebrations were dominated by performances by students from different countries, and panel discussions from the college’s alumni among others.
