Mak Lecturer who was Filmed Assaulting Female Student Interdicted

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University has with immediate effect interdicted Mr. Benard Wandera a lecturer who assaulted a female student in a viral video.

It is alleged that this unfortunate incident happened on November 18, in the Frank- Kirimuzo central teaching facility.

In the viral video, Wandera is seen physically assaulting a female student an unlawful act that contravenes the provisions of the Universities and other Tertiary institutions Act 2001 as amended and the Makerere University Human Resource manual of 2009.

“Pursuant to section 55(2) of the Universities and other tertiary institutions  Act 2001, as well as the provisions of the Uganda Public Service standing orders 2021 and the Makerere University Human Resources Manual 2009, I hereby interdict you from the University in order to protect the reputation of the institution, its students and in order not to jeopardize the ongoing investigations,” Nawangwe highlighted.

Nawangwe however noted that Wandera will be invited to participate in the proceedings when a committee to investigate allegations of assault, harassment, and willful professional misconduct will be constituted.

According to Nawangwe, Wandera during his interdiction will not be allowed to access his office and other University premises and will receive halfway his salary until the investigations are concluded and the case is determined by the Appointment board.

Wandera furthermore was required to prepare a handover report and to hand over all the university property in his possession to the head of the department of social work and social administration in the presence of the Dean school of social sciences.

Wandera’s action attracted debate all over the country ranging from fellow students, activists, and human rights organizations.
