Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition and spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has reported that although Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi is no longer in immediate danger, he is still suffering severe pain after being injured by a police projectile.
According to Ssenyonyi, the incident occurred as Kyagulanyi was leaving the home of lawyer George Musisi, where a crowd had begun to gather. This prompted police to fire teargas and live bullets.
“When Kyagulanyi came out to engage the officers regarding their actions, one of them, at close range, aimed a projectile at him, causing a blunt injury to his leg,” Ssenyonyi stated.
He further explained that fragments from the canister were found in Kyagulanyi’s leg, as shown in an X-ray provided by doctors.
“The doctors have informed us that further surgery will be required to remove the fragments. Fortunately, Kyagulanyi is still alive, but he remains in severe pain,” Ssenyonyi added.
Speaking from Nsambya Hospital on Tuesday evening, Ssenyonyi dismissed the police’s version of events, calling it fabricated.
“It’s unfortunate that the police and military continue to act this way towards leaders and citizens, only to later release false statements about what happened. It’s both ridiculous and infuriating,” he asserted.
In a statement released earlier, the police claimed that Kyagulanyi sustained injuries after stumbling while entering his vehicle during the altercation. However, Kyagulanyi and his team maintain that he was shot.
