Kawempe NRM mobilisers, supporters reject Faridah Nambi’s candidature

A group of people claiming to be mobilizers and supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party have today rejected the candidature of Ms Faridah Nambi in the forthcoming Kawempe North By-elections.

Nambi who in 2021 lost to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party’s Shamim Malende in the Kampala Woman MP race, was on January 29, unveiled by the party leadership as the party’s official candidate in the polls that will take place on March 3.

The bitter mobilizers and supporters told reporters that Ms Nambi does not have the power to defeat opposition in the polls that seek to replace the deceased Muhammad Ssegirinya who died last month after battling sickness for over two years.

These want the party to revise their choice and hand the flag to Ms Hanifah Karadi whom they believe has more potential.

“We don’t need a flag but someone who will rescue Kawempe from the hands of the opposition, we want to send someone who will be a bridge between us and the government. Nambi did not make 3000 votes in Kawempe North during her Kampala Woman MP race in 2021 and Hon Kasenge got 4,000 votes meaning when you compare the two the latter is strong,” said Amuli Mayinja, the Kyebando NRM General Secretary.

Jalia Namatovu resident of Kyebando Central Zone and an NRM area mobilizer said, “I am tired of working for people who come to hunt for votes and leave us like that we searched for Nambi’s vote but when she went she didn’t return to thank us for mobilizing. Kyebando has many voters,”

Arafat Kajimu NRM leader Kyebando Katale Zone noted that Nambi is not liked on the ground and she resides in Makindye not Kawempe where she seeks to be voted.
Other members including James Bakaluba, a senior party mobiliser, Muhamood Muwada Lubega, and Abedi Kalanzi the party youth secretary vowed never to support Ms Nambi whom they said would bring another humiliation to the party’s performance in the areas.

The development came a day after a section of the candidates had expressed interest to challenge Ms Nam
Kisowera Zone in Kawempe Division yesterday, NRM aspirants including; Onesimus Mutumba, Samuel Katabaazi Ssankala, and Faridah Nambi reached a consensus to rally behind Ms Nambi as their flag bearer in the upcoming Kawempe North MP by-election, aiming for a landslide victory.

The NRM supporters described this as a betrayal by the people in the party leadership to them.
At least 16 people have so far shown interest in replacing Ssegirinya who died last month in Lubaga hospital after battling with diseases for over two years since he was released from Prison.

The NUP aspirants include Sseggirinya’s former political assistant Alex Lusswa Luwemba, Umar Magala, Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, Mathias Mulumba, Salim Sserunkuma, Dr Ismael Matovu, and Saulo Kulya Zziwa.

From the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), seven aspirants are interested in flying the flag high. They are Juliet Namale, Hanifah Karadi, Faridah Nnambi, George Mutumba Onesimas, Ali Jemba, Samuel Katabaazi Ssankala, and Samuel Kawooya Kigongo.

Other party; the Peoples Front for Freedom has fronted Muhamood Mutazindwa while Ismail Musiitwa is contesting on the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) ticket.
