Kawempe North By-election: Ssegirinya’s PA joins NUP card hunt

Lusswa Mohammad Luwemba, a former personal assistant to the former Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya has today submitted his credentials to the National Unity Platform (NUP) special Electoral management Committee seeking the party’s backing in bid to replace the deceased legislator.
Luwemba joined over 10 other candidates who have already expressed interest in getting this card.
This came as the Electoral Management Committee concluded its exercise of receiving credentials of individuals who would like to be given the card for the March 3, polls.
“The Election Management Committee has today afternoon concluded its exercise of receiving candidates who have expressed interest in the Kawempe North MP by-election, and the Kazo-Angola Councillor seat,” NUP posted on its official X-platform.
Yesterday five more candidates expressed their interest in the Kawempe North MP by-election seat under our platform bringing the total number of the so far received candidates to eight ahead of our closure tomorrow afternoon.
The candidates who submitted their credentials today are; Rubagumwa Charles, senior lawyer Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola, Fredrick Kakiika, and Salim Sserunkuuma.
However, Saul Kulya has been given till tomorrow to submit his convincing academic credentials.
The Election Management Committee will close the exercise tomorrow afternoon and the fully eligible candidates shall be announced, and the vetting process will begin thereafter.
The Committee was established by the party leadership to ensure that the process is held transparently.
At least 16 people have so far shown interest in replacing Ssegirinya who died last month in Lubaga hospital after battling with diseases for over two years since he was released from Prsion.
The NUP aspirants include Sseggirinya’s former political assistant Alex Lusswa Luwemba, Umar Magala, Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, Mathias Mulumba, Salim Sserunkuma, Dr Ismael Matovu, and Saulo Kulya Zziw
From the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), seven aspirants are interested in flying the flag high. They are Juliet Namale, Hanifah Karadi, Faridah Nnambi, George Mutumba Onesimas, Ali Jemba, Samuel Katabaazi Ssankala, and Samuel Kawooya Kigongo.
Other party; the Peoples Front for Freedom has fronted Muhamood Mutazindwa while Ismail Musiitwa is contesting on the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) ticket.
NUP party leadership says that they will vet all people and come up with one candidate who will be supported. NUP party President Robert Kyagulanyi has on several occasions made it clear that they will only choose someone who is loved by the public.
