The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has awarded a group of students for developing a Handheld Locator, which allows Persons With Disabilities (PWD) to notify their guardian/caretaker in real-time in case of danger.
Muhammad Sumare, the Deputy Academic Registrar, Kampala Campus said that this handheld locater in case of any danger, the stranded PWD presses the button on the wearable device, which sends location coordinates to the registered phone number of the guardian as a text message.
“The device has been fully tested on some disability cases and is more effective and affordable to the PWDs than currently available solutions,” Mr. Sumare stated.
The Deputy Academic Registrar added that the device is anticipated that, once rolled out to the market, it will help better the welfare and productivity of PWDs, especially in low-income communities.
The handheld locator’s innovators included Khasalamwa Phiona Nandutu, Mustafa Yasin, Ntambi Ashraf, and Ms. Wanyana Hasifah, all from Kampala Campus.
They won the Rector’s Ward at the 30th graduation ceremony on the 10th of June 2022. The Rector’s award is given to the best innovative student.
Other merit awardees of the 30th Graduation include Nduhura Kassim, who won the Prince Badru Kakungulu Award as the best student of the year.
Kassim, a Food Science and Nutrition student and President of the IUIU Food Science and Nutrition Association, had an outstanding performance of 4.92 CGPA.
Another awardee is Kobusigye Sumayyah, who received the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) award given to the best Muslim Female student. Kobusigye, a Bachelor of Art Sharia student, was the Dawa Minister in the Guild Council, a Qur’an memorizer who scored a CGPA of 4.65.
In addition, the Alumni Award was given to Hon. Kayagi Sarah is a highly disciplined student who exhibited good interpersonal skills and scored a CGPA of 4.78. Kayagi is a Social Work And Social Administration student at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and a Woman Member of the Parliament of Namisindwa District.
