Insurance Sector urged on embracing Technology to cub service provision challenges

The insurance sector has been urged to prioritize adaptable technology and innovation to further eliminate of service provision challenges.

Dr. Edward Kanyesigye, the Board Chairperson of Mulago Hospital recommended that technology also foster better service delivery as well as enhance relationships between key stakeholders within the medical healthcare industry.

‘We call on the Insurance industry to embrace technology and innovation and adopt EDI as a best standard practice in eliminating service provision challenges,” he said adding that “There is a need to embrace innovation and utilize the available opportunities to improve health systems by providing innovative, secure and high-tech solutions for the sector at the national and regional level.”

While he officiated the launch of the

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) by Smart Applications International (U) Limited looks forward to automating the healthcare process, Kanyesigye said that this technological innovation is well aligned to the future of healthcare in Uganda, since the industry is ailing with manual processes that are bulky and promotes unnecessary delays in the processing of claims and ultimately delayed payments by the payers/insurance companies.

“The need for enhanced service delivery processes in healthcare underscored the importance of technology, which led to the adoption of platforms such as telemedicine that were largely supported by digital platforms.”

EDI is an interconnecting online platform that has been created to revamp claims delivery processes within the medical insurance sector. 

“Smart believes that the launch of EDI will be a game changer in the medical industry. It will not only improve the claims submission process, but it will create a better working relationship between the medical insurance providers and medical health facilities.” Judy Mugoya, Country Manager, Smart Applications Int (U) Ltd said during the launch.

Partison Ndyamuhaki, the Head of Medical, Sanlam Life Insurance Ltd said that the future of healthcare lies in technological innovations in delivering accessible, affordable, and quality health care.

“This platform will ease the process of claims reconciliation and improve the turnaround time of claims paid as a result of E- Claim reporting & submission being fully done on the Smart EDI platform,” he said
