I didn’t Apply for Airlines Top Job-Jennifer Bamuturaki tells COSASE

Jennifer Bamuturaki, the newly appointed CEO of Uganda Airlines has revealed that she never applied for the job but found herself being appointed.

Bamuturaki who was in an acting capacity when he was appointed by President Museveni recently said that she was planning to apply for the job, the very day she learned of her appointment.

She noted that she was not among the 40 Ugandans who applied for the job because “on the day I was going to apply, that is when I was appointed, ” she said Bamuturaki was appearing before the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authority and State Enterprise (COSASE), led by Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi.COSASE Chaired quizzed the Bamuturaki on how she got appointed as Aide to the acting CEO and yet she had no appointment letter and was not being paid a salary.

The committee also questioned how she rose from Aide to CEO. Herbert Kamuntu the Uganda Airlines board member said that when Uganda Airlines advertised for the position of CEO, at Least 40 Ugandans applied.

“However following a presidential directive to appoint Jennifer Bamuturaki, the whole process was halted,” he said

MPs were also shocked to learn about the huge salary scale that is being earned by the Airlines Top Brass with the CEO getting Shs87M, the Chief Financial Officer Shs80m among others.

MPs said that they are not against the salary of the Pilots, but asked Uganda Airlines officials to explain why the airline which is making loses 160bn) a year is paying managers and directors exorbitantly with the CEO earning 87 m shs.

The committee also questioned why some Pilots get Shs60m and others Shs50million.

“Some Cabin Crew members earn Shs4m, while others earn Shs2m,” they said

The CEO of Uganda Airlines says that Airbus has a different pay structure while CRJ Bombardier also has a different one. Ssenyonyi has tasked Uganda Airlines to come up with a staff structure within one month.

He says this is how the Airlines will know who is needed and who is not.

The Airlines had asked for the end of the year to develop one. MPs say they are not against the salary of the Pilots but asked Uganda Airlines officials to explain why the airline which is making losses (160bn) a year is paying managers and directors exorbitantly with the CEO earning 87 m shs.
