A section of Science teachers in the Elgon subregion has declared a Sit-down strike over salary rise.
Those who subscribe under their umbrella body of Bugisu Science Teachers Federation (BSTF) met at hotel 100 in Mbale and confirmed this development to reporters.
They through Journalists informed the nation that they are not going to teach students until salary issue is resolved by the government,
“As the schools as across the country resume for term two studies we Science teachers in Mbale under our umbrella bugisu science teachers union have vowed not to return to school over salary increment,” they said
These include among other teachers of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics say that they want to be paid at least 3million for a diploma holder and 4million for a degree holder,
Speaking to reporters, Twariru Musiramu, the president of bugisu science teachers union said that teachers have been fooled for a long time and it’s time now to step down until salary increment is resolved,
“I call upon teachers not to go back to school and not to fear any intimidation,” he said
He also confirmed that there is a letter that was written by the ministry of public service but they can’t agree with it at this time.
Nabirye Zeuria Damalie the General Secretary of BSTF told journalists that they are not to step back in class until their salaries are increased,
Zeuria added that the government sat with a few of their leaders across the country yesterday and decided that at first they be paid 1million for diploma holders and Sh2m for a degree holder something which they don’t agree with.
She says that they are the ones who make all the professionals who are highly paid in the country like Engineers and doctors
Higenyi Amuza Treasurer Bugisu science teachers union said that there are some members of parliament who are intimidating and assaulting them that teachers are poor they can’t go on strike and a chieve ,
However he assured the honorable members that teachers are more educated than members of parliament,
