DP’s Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere Dies at 90


Two times presidential contestant and Democratic Party former Leader Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere has died.

A close family member said that Dr. Ssemogerere died early Friday morning aged 90 at his home in Rubaga.

Dr. Paul Ssemogerere was born on 11th February 1932, in Bumangi, Buggala Island, present-day Kalangala District, Dr. Paul Ssemwogerere was later baptized the same year on 18th February.

The deceased’s lifeless body has now been taken to Rubaga Hospital for postmortem

Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago described Ssemwogerere as a true patriot who has up to the time of his demise tirelessly worked toward uniting the forces of change.

“We learned of his death early in the morning and we were devastated. He dedicated his life to uniting forces of change in this country. He was a strong man and had been pursuing unity.”

“He had given us different assignments and I was supposed to meet him today to follow up on our engagement. It’s really sad that he has not lived to see the moment he worked so hard for.”

Luke’s further eulogized him as a true statesman and a godfather to many Ugandans in the political landscape.

“He’s been our mentor. Since I cut my political teeth, I have been in his hands and he has always molded us. A week hardly passes without me and him having a chat about many things including the future of this country,” Lukwago told journalists early Friday at the deceased’s home.

Dr. Ssemwogerere served as the Democratic Party leader for 25 years which he outstandingly served and put a profound legacy in Ugandan politics before retirement in 2005.
