In the bid to fulfill the United Nations goal of eliminating HIV/AIDS by 2030, the Uganda Network of Young People Living with Aids (UNYPA) on Friday distributed over 5,000 pieces of condoms in the Slum areas of Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb.

According to UNYPA, HIV/AIDS is still a big burden to a number of youth in African countries, with Uganda alone youth being the majority of the 1.3 million infected victims.

Kamwokya is a location within the capital Kampala with its northern portion being a densely packed slum with poorly constructed housing units, poor drainage, and rudimentary sanitary infrastructure with attendant public health challenges.

In this campaign dubbed “Condom Use Campaign” UNYPA, together with UNAID, TASO, UNASO, and Uganda Cares sensitized the masses on how to use condoms, where to find them and how they can access them if they need them.

Robert Abigaba the chairman of Kisenyi (II) Zone where this slum is located applauded this initiative for sensitizing and guiding mainly the youth of the region and called upon UNYPA to improve on these efforts such that every youth is involved.

“It’s crucial to involve local governments in such campaigns I urge youth here to know that life is precious, if you are to succeed in your dreams you should be free from diseases such as Aids,” he said

Abigaba cautioned girls and women about unprotected sex because this can lead to STDs and unwanted pregnancies and also called upon them to always seek condoms from his office because they are always available and at a free cost.

Byaruhanga Henry alias McKenzie, the Ghetto HIV/AIDS Ambassador, who was the leader of the campaign in this community said that the campaign came in at the time when condom demand in the ghetto was in high demand and this can be evidenced by the increasing numbers young mothers and sex workers.

“This campaign is to help us overcome the challenges of condom awareness and accessibility in the ghetto due to the economic difficulties that we the people who leave their face,” Andrew articulated.

McKenzie also highlighted that because the ghetto accommodates various groups of vulnerable people, UNYPA should make condoms available always in dispensers due to the positive reactions sighted in this drive.

Soweto- Namuwongo condom ambassador Yiga Jayson who was also part of this drive opened up that youth can now access condoms without fear and to him, this is because of the sensitization emphasis deployed lately by the UNFPA and UNYPA in these 2 years.

“The impact is now visible, and I strongly believe that when this campaign is further extended to ghettos of Katwe and Bwaise, they are high chances that HIV/AIDS will be eliminated in the country by 2030,” Jayson added.

UNYPA is an organization started in 2003 with the aim of providing leadership and coordinating a greater meaningful involvement of young people living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
