Bugisu Christians Mourn Deceased Former North Mbale Bishop Muwombi

Christians in the Bugisu sub-region especially in Sironko and Bulambuli are mourning the demise of the former Bishop of North Mbale Rt. Rev. Nathan Muwombi.

Muwombi was a Bishop of the North Mbale Diocese from 1997 to 2003. He died on Tuesday morning at Joy Hospice Hospital in Mbale City-Industrial Division after battling with stroke for five years and was rushed to the private facility Monday when his condition worsened. 

Muwombi was Born in 1946 in the then Bugisu district and served as the second Bishop of North Mbale Diocese from March 1997 to August 2003 when he resigned amidst allegations of marital infidelity. 

He first served as a parish priest for some time before he proceeded to Bloomsburg University in the United States of America for further studies where he also served as a parish priest at St Paul’s Church. 

When he returned to Uganda, he was posted as a tutor at the Bishop Wilson Usher Theological College in Buwalasi in Sironko district before he was consecrated as the second Bishop of North Mbale in 1997.

Bishop Samuel Gidudu of Mbale North diocese said the late during his tenure as the Bishop of North Mbale had challenges that forced him to resign from the Episcopal ministry.

“He served the diocese for six years before he abandoned the episcopal ministry, I am using the word abandoned because he did not take a normal retirement,” he said.

Giddudu notes that during his tenure as a Bishop, Mawumbi was very influential in evangelism adding that many people converted to Christianity during his time and that he was key in training a big number of manpower noting that he was also trained and ordained by the late.

“He was a talented preacher of the gospel; many people came to Christ during his time of evangelism,” he told this adding that one of the biggest challenges he faced was financial challenges which affected his work.

“When he was still a bishop, in the church, he was a wonderful preacher, many people liked him,” she said
