Batalo; the biggest dance festival goes to Butaleja
The 2023 edition of Batalo dance festival shall kick off on December 16, at Batalo East Creative Center, Kachonga, Butaleja District, the organisers have announced.
The festival which is making its 10th year started in 2013 at the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) popularly known as National Theatre.
It has since its inception, connected over 1,000 young performers from various countries, uniting African culture with urban expression.
“This dynamic event fosters unity among diverse clans and tribes, celebrating Uganda’s unique heritage through music, dance, training, and discussions,” the organisers said in a press statement.
The festival was established by a group of young creatives and arts and cultural managers majorly to address the identity crisis among our youth, preserve traditional African culture, and provide safe spaces for creativity and innovation in arts, science, and community engagement. Their core mission, they said is to nurture and empower innovative Africans and artists who take pride in their heritage and are globally aware.
This year’s festival will showcase performances from diverse regions, featuring traditional, contemporary, and urban dances, along with local talent from Butaleja’s youth community.
Revellers will be treated with performances from 30 artists from Tanzania, Jinja, Kampala, Mbale and 4 traditional troupes and local musicians and talents from Butaleja, soul xpressions, streetdance force.
Between 800 and 1500 revellers can fit very well in the selected space which shall be inaugurated by this function.
“This center will serve as a hub for talent development, cultural preservation, intergenerational dialogue, and social and economic growth through performing arts for Butaleja’s youth,” they said.
