Anthony Kituuka: From Customer Services Manager at Hima Cement to Managing Director Equity Bank

In July 2006, Anthony Kituuka was appointed as the customer services manager at Hima Cement, in 8 months, Kituuka UpTo February 2007 was responsible for the customer services function of the company. 

“I established appropriate control processes within the function in line with Sarbanes Oxley Act requirements and instituted customer satisfaction indicators like OTIFIC to benchmark the company’s performance compared to Group companies and global industry standards,_ he said 

“I was also charged with the development of value propositions,” he added 

16 years later, Kituuka was today announced as the Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda Ltd.

He replaced Samuel Kirubi who has since been promoted to the position of Chief Operating Officer at Equity Group Holdings Plc.

“We are confident that Anthony will build on his institutional knowledge and work together with his immediate predecessor and Equity Uganda staff to push Equity Uganda to the next level of growth,” Mark Ocitti Chairman of Equity Bank Uganda said in a statement,

“We are confident that his experience in banking and the corporate world will enable him to lead the bank to scale and serve more people in pursuit of our purpose of transforming lives, giving dignity, and expanding opportunities for wealth creation,” he added.

Describing himself, Kituuka says, “I am a driven, ambitious, resourceful and respectful person who is passionate about success and leading others to attain their highest potential,” 

Kituuka attended King’s College, Buddo between 1989 and 1995, before joining Makerere University, where he pursued a  Bachelor of Statistics and Applied Economics (Upper Second Honours) in Computing between 1995 and 1998.

He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Oil and Gas Distinction from Middlesex University which he attained between 2011 and 2013.

“A rigorous, challenging yet rewarding look at the global oil and gas industry from the upstream to the downstream segments. This innovative application of the principles of business administration to the operational, geopolitical, legal, financial, environmental, and strategic issues encountered in the oil and gas industry was an eye-opener to me as a potential stakeholder in the development of the resource in my home country, Uganda,” he said 

Kituuka started his Banking career as the Head of Business Banking at 

Barclays Bank Uganda Limited in 2007, after leaving Hima Cement Uganda Ltd.

Here, he worked for one year and six months between March 2007 and August 2008. 

He says that he performed a dual role as a Senior Relationship Manager for the top 15 large MNCs as well as leading a team of 5 relationship managers who manage a portfolio of around 600 business banking and high net worth connections. 

“I was responsible for the design and implementation of strategies to maximize corporate revenue generation for the bank while minimizing income leakage,” he said

He later joined KCB Bank Uganda Ltd, as the Head of Corporate Banking, where he worked between October 2008 and February 2014 (posting 5 years and 5 months).

“I was responsible for the formulation and implementation of strategies to maximize corporate revenue generation, meet KCB Group corporate growth objectives, and manage related department expenditure,” he said adding,

“I also ensured the consistent implementation of Board of Directors’ resolutions. In my time there, I established a stable wholesale banking department, growing the loan book fifteenfold,”

From Uganda, Kituuka crossed to KCB Bank Kenya as the Head of Global Corporates February 2014 and October 2014 (9 months)

“I led a team at the KCB Group head office in Nairobi, Kenya that was responsible for managing corporate relationships of high-end regional companies operating across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan,” he said 

Later in October 2014, joined Equity Bank Ltd as the Executive Regional Subsidiaries Equity Bank Limited between October 2014 and June 2016 (1 year 9 months). 

He was posted in Nairobi Kenya.

“My responsibilities include working under the Group CEO to design, drive and deliver the strategic objectives of the group underpinned by digitization and regional expansion,” he said 

It was from this position that Kituuka was later in June 2016 that he was elevated to the Executive Director

Equity Bank Uganda Ltd up to today.

During this position, Kituuka worked with the Managing Director to provide strategic leadership and direction to this subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings Limited, to contribute to the achievement of the Group’s mission of offering inclusive, customer-focused financial services that socially and economically empower our clients and other stakeholders.

He will effectively today drive the seat of the MD.
