H.E. Nelson Ocheger, Uganda’s High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the West African Region, has reiterated Uganda’s commitment towards ending HIV/AIDS.
Ocheger said that the personnel of President Museveni and the entire government are committed to working towards the elimination of HIV/Aids from Uganda by 2030.
He made these remarks while meeting Dr. Leo Zekeng, the newly appointed UNAIDS Country Director and Representative who had paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday this week.
The High Commissioner warmly welcomed Dr. Zikeng and assured him of his commitment to work closely with the UNAIDS Country Director and representative.
He lauded the important role UNAIDS has and continues to play in the fight against HIV/Aids in the world and Uganda in particular.
The UNAIDS interventions in Uganda have had significant impacts on the reduction of Aids infections, morbidity, and mortality through prevention, early detection, reporting, treatment, and management.
The High Commissioner expressed appreciation to the UNAIDS for closely working with the Government of Uganda over the years and for the Milestone achievements in rolling back the HIV/Aids scourge.
In response, the UNAIDS Country Representative thanked the High Commissioner for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him.
He reiterated the enthusiasm of his Organisation to continue the good work and achievements made in the prevention, detection, treatment, and management of HIV/Aids in Uganda.
He paid special tribute to H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his leadership in the fight against HIV/Aids which is acknowledged around the world.
Dr. Zikeng thanked the Government of Uganda for its pledge towards replenishing the Global Funds resources, noting that this will go a long way in addressing the funding gaps that negatively impact the delivery of essential medical services to the populations in need.
He also lauded the leadership qualities of the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Eng. Winnie Byanyima, a Ugandan National, has made significant innovative changes in the Organization, resulting in greater effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Leo Zekeng invited the High Commissioner H.E. Nelson Ocheger to attend the forthcoming UNAIDS Summit to take place in Abuja, Nigeria 6th and 7th of November 2022.
The High Commissioner gladly accepted the invitation and reemphasized his readiness to continue closely working with the UNAIDS Country Representative.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador Alfred Nnam, Deputy Head of Mission at the High Commission.
