32 Mbale ‘Gov’t Teachers’ threaten to strike over salary arrears

A total of 32 primary level Government Teachers have threatened to go on strike after going 15 months without any payment.

The disgruntled teachers said that they had applied for jobs following a District advert in 2019 where able applicants were invited to apply for jobs.

They claim 64 teachers were issued with appointment letters by the then Chief Administrative Officer Essau Ekachelan in June 2020 and posted to various primary schools in the District.

Headed by Martin Mukhwana a primary teacher at Bunambutye Primary School, these say 32 of the 64 teachers haven’t received any salary since their appointment yet the other 32 are reportedly receiving their salary.

In 2019 February, the District Service Commission ran an advert in New Vision, Where we applied, sat for interviews, and got appointed in June last year, we were all given appointment letters before we were posted to different schools in July,” he said.

He further said that different avenues of engaging the district leadership ran futile noting that these always send them away claiming that they possess fake documents.

What perturbs is that whenever we come here we are forcefully sent away with unrealistic accusations of possessing fake documents yet they were fully signed by the person who was in office by then,” he said.

We wonder how the 32 with whom we were appointed are having genuine appointment letters yet we all have the very same documents signed by the same person on the same date!” he added.

It’s understood that Essau Ekachelan the then Chief Administrative Officer was transferred to Pallisa

Meanwhile, the current Mbale Chief Administrative Officer Lucy Francis Amulen said she has less knowledge about the appointment of the 32 teachers adding that she checked in the District Service Commission records but there were no minutes supporting their appointment.

I don’t know how he brought them on board, I don’t have any minutes of them being appointed, I picked extra minutes from the District Service Commission but those people do not appear in that extract,
