Security Forces led by Uganda Police Force (UPF), this week arrested 12 criminals including three officers of the Kampala Capital City Authority who have been extorting money from cyclists in illegal staged operations.
Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson in Kampala Metropolitan Area said in a statement that these ones’ arrests followed a lot of complaints from motorists, especially boda boda riders who have been accusing people in civilian wear of impounding their motorcycles along the clock tower area and later extort money from them before releasing the illegally impounded motorcycles, the Police at Central Police station – Kampala “Yesterday (11.05.2022 ) carried out an operation in the affected areas of Clocktower and Biwologoma where several complaints had been registered. 12 suspects have been arrested. These include three KCCA enforcement officers whom the riders accuse of colluding with others to extort money,” he said
“A chain used to lock down the motorcycles in un gazetted places has also been recovered and taken as evidence,” he added.
Owoyesigire said that the operation is still ongoing and the public should take note that only officers in uniform should stop and impound their motorcycles.
“In case you are affected by such a situation, report the matter to the DPC, Central Police Station, or Officer-in-charge of traffic. The arrested suspects will be arraigned in courts of law as soon as investigations on them are done,” he said
